Gledhill Flexible Thermal Storage Range Meets Housebuilders' Every Need

A mixed development of apartments, town houses and villas created by Miller Homes in Edinburgh, is having all its heating and hot water needs met by the flexible range of thermal storage appliances from Gledhill. Apartments created by Miller Homes in Edinburgh.
The luxury development consists of various different property types; from 2 bedroom apartments to 5 bedroom villas with prices ranging from £200k to £500k. Each of the properties has differing heating requirements due to size of the accommodation and the individual style and design of the homes, and 3 different Gledhill appliances were specified for the development.

Miller Homes has recently developed its relationship with Gledhill making BoilerMate a national specification for its developments. Gledhill’s unique thermal storage appliances offer a range of benefits for householders including almost double the hot water performance of conventional systems, 2 minute rapid warm-up and the SWITCH emergency back-up system - an alternative heating and hot water source immediately available in the event of boiler failure.

The first challenge at the development was to meet the demands of the 2-storey 5 bedroom detached family houses within the development. The homes needed a highly responsive hot water and heating system, able to cope with periods of high simultaneous demand from with the three bathrooms.

Gledhill’s versatile BoilerMate was perfect for the houses. Linked to a conventional boiler, it delivers a full 35 litres per minute of hot water, with mains pressure ensuring automatic ‘power shower’ performance and central heating radiators taking just a few minutes to achieve full output.

The second challenge was to supply the 3-storey 5 bedroom townhouses without infringing on the living space on the 3rd floor. The heating system was situated on the second floor, so the property needed a quiet system that could serve the third-floor bathrooms without additional pumps, a pressure device and with no tanks or pipes on the upper floors.

Purpose-designed for ground floor installation, Gledhill’s SysteMate is designed to work within a sealed primary circuit system in conjunction with a conventional boiler. The pressurised operation of the sealed primary circuit enables the SysteMate to occupy a variety of locations within a dwelling, and it is able to handle periods of high simultaneous demand from homes with multiple bathrooms.
The final challenge was to cater for 2/3 bedroom apartments within the low-rise apartment blocks with a main bathroom and en-suite shower.
The apartments needed a gas-fired heating and hot water system within a single box and a flexible flueing arrangement to utilise the available space within the apartments and give the building designer complete freedom in siting the unit.

By close coupling a highly efficient condensing boiler with a thermal store which is totally integrated with all of the system’s controls, GulfStream delivers a complete heating system in a single box. The sleek design of the Gledhill’s GulfStream with a footprint of just 595mm² means it can be comfortably accommodated in an airing cupboard or in a utility room or garage. It also offers a very efficient fan-assisted flueing arrangement with 60mm and 80mm diameter flues that can be used over a length of up to 30 metres, allowing the appliance to be sited virtually anywhere.

Gledhill’s range of thermal storage appliances have proved extremely popular with installers because the pre-plumbed pre-wired units require no pressure relief valves or run-off to ground. John Boyle, for Alan J Smith Electrical Services commented: “The various Gledhill units proved straightforward to install and commission. The front connections on all the units assist the installation process, as does the template to assist in the optimum location for first fix of pipe work.

“We have used their appliances on new build sites in the past but this is the first time such a variety of units have been employed to meet the individual needs of different house designs, and the selection worked very well.”

Gledhill’s Chairman Houghton Gledhill commented, “This development demonstrates how Gledhill can meet the needs of virtually any property. Now there’s no reason why any development in the UK should settle for second best with its heating and hot water provision”.
