A nightly TV News programme charting the quest to find a UK Ecohero has given Gledhill Water Storage a big role on the small screen with its micro Combined Heat and Power (mCHP) BoilerMate appliance. Alan Simpson MP’s newly converted eco friendly home in Nottingham

The UK’s leading manufacturer of appliances that maximise the efficiency of alternative energies is supplying energy-saving heating and hot water in Alan Simpson MP’s newly converted eco friendly home in Nottingham.

Some several million viewers saw Labour MP for Nottingham South, Alan Simpson in his newly completed derelict factory conversion which puts back 50% more energy than it takes out. These efforts at leading the way on climate change in real life as well as parliament have rewarded Alan with a nomination for the prestigious national Ecohero title.

Along with a range of renewable energy technologies and materials, Alan has installed Gledhill’s BoilerMate mCHP into his home, which replaces the conventional boiler and generates electricity. The mCHP then utilises the heat produced during the process of electricity generation for heating and hot water and any surplus generated is sold back into the national grid.

Unlike other alternative energy heating systems, Gledhill’s BoilerMate mCHP incorporates a thermal store which has a sophisticated control programme to assess the energy flows in the property and monitor the rate of energy change in the store. The system then decides whether to allow the temperature to deplete or to activate the mCHP appliance.

This way, heat can be put into Alan’s home immediately as there will always be energy in the store. And if a property is cold and requires a big withdrawal of energy, the mCHP will fire and generate full output long before the store is drained.

Alan Simpson MP said: “We are heading to a crisis in climate change that will soon transform the way we live and work and as an MP I want to lead by example. Too few homes in the UK utilise alternative energies for heating and hot water and with this Ecohero nomination I can hopefully demonstrate just how much energy can be saved by integrating a system like Gledhill’s.”

Alan is one of five candidates nominated for the Ecohero Award which recognises the extraordinary lengths people go to in order to help the environment.

The BoilerMate mCHP is one of three heating and hot water appliances that Gledhill manufactures to maximise the efficiency of alternative energies. Gledhill’s BoilerMate Sol utilises the heat produced by the sun and stored in solar panels to supplement a conventional boiler and up to 1,000 of these units are now being installed in UK housing projects. With its BoilerMate HP, Gledhill has worked with a major supplier of ground source heat pump equipment to develop the optimum package to utilise the low grade heat extracted from the ground and delivered to the home provide heat and hot water.
